This clinical scenario takes place in the inpatient unit of an acute psychiatric mental health hospital. Mattie's treatment requires specific nursing care that focuses on: safety, medication stabilization, intensive behavior management and daily functioning, and physiologic stability (i.e., sleep, fluid, nutrition, and elimination). Discharge needs include education and support for Mattie's family, and continued psychiatric follow-up for Mattie. This scenario provides the student learner with exposure to some of the most common manic client behaviors and problems, and information about how to manage these clients in an inpatient setting.
