 | Submitting Figures
Submit a complete set of figures with the original and each copy of the manuscript. Figures must be professionally drawn and photographed and submitted in camera-ready form. Illustrations should not be mounted. Half-tone illustrations must be presented as sharp, glossy, black and white prints or high-quality, laser-printed illustrations. Photocopies are unacceptable. |
| |
 | Lettering
Freehand lettering is unacceptable. Lettering on the figures should be Helvetica font, 6-point or greater. Lettering should be large enough that it will remain legible after figure reduction. |
| |
 | Color Figures
Color figures are generally published at the author's expense. |
| |
 | Electronic Figures
Many computer-generated figures are unsatisfactory for publication provided that they can be clearly reproduced. For example, lettering should be of adequate size to retain clarity after reduction (final lettering size in print should be 1.5 mm high). Symbols, cross-hatching, and stippling within a figure should be sharp and distinct enough to retain uniqueness after reduction. |
| |
 | Citation
Cite each figure in the text in consecutive order. If a figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission for print and electronic (internet and CD ROM) formats from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required, regardless of authorship or publisher, except for documents in the public domain. |
| |
 | Human Subjects
If photographs of people are used, their identities must be obscured or the picture must be accompanied by written permission of the subject or legal guardian to use the photograph. |
| |
 | Legends
A legend must accompany each illustration. Type legends for illustrations double-spaced starting on a separate page, in order of appearance, with arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers, and/or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend.
|
| |
 | Labeling Figures
Each figure must have a label pasted on its back indicating the number of the figure, the names of the authors, and the top of the figure. Do not write on the back of the figures. Internal scale markers, symbols, arrows, and letters used in the photomicrographs should contrast with the background.

| |
 | Abbreviations
Define all abbreviations used in each illustration. Repeat definition if the abbreviation is used in a subsequent legend. |
