Key Considerations in Developing New Journals

Editorial
  1. What is the editorial purpose of this publication?
  2. What would the content consist of?
  3. What feature areas (departments) will the journal include? What types of articles will appear in each section? (Please supply a list of likely article titles for the first several issues.)
  4. What specialties would be represented on the Editorial Board? Who, in particular, might you ask to join? (Please give their affiliation.)
  5. Would the Editorial Board members actively review articles? Write articles? Solicit articles?
  6. From whom would you solicit manuscripts? Would the manuscripts be peer-reviewed? How long would a typical article be?
  7. Where do the articles which you propose to publish currently appear?
  8. What is the proposed title of the publication?
Design/Mechanical Dimensions
  1. Please describe "the look" of the publication you envision.
  2. What kind of illustrations would be needed -- graphs, charts, tables, photographs?
  3. What will the periodicity be -- quarterly, bimonthly, monthly?
  4. What is the estimated number of printed pages per issue? Please include in your estimate an allowance for any illustrated pages and tables.
Markets
  1. Who would be the primary audience(s)? How would they benefit from this journal? Who would be the secondary audience(s)? How would they benefit?
  2. What publications do these audiences currently read? Are they "paid" or free publications? How would our journal be more valuable/attractive than the competition?
  3. What specific organizations would be interested in subscribing? Do they have annual meetings? Do they already have publications they sponsor?
Advertising
  1. What commercial products do potential subscribers purchase or cause to have purchased in their work settings?
  2. Where do ads for these products currently appear?
