Critical Care Medicine is a discipline of medicine that
focuses on the care of critically ill and injured patients. These
patients frequently present with acute, unexpected illnesses or
injuries. They require the minute-to-minute care of a physician
who has specialized in the field of critical care. These physicians
are called intensivists or critical care physicians. In addition
to requiring several years of postgraduate education, physicians
require ongoing education in this rapidly evolving discipline.
In 1970, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)
was founded for the purpose of organizing education in the field
of critical care medicine, and to promote research which would advance
the field. The stated vision of SCCM is the following: SCCM envisions
a health system in which critically ill and injured persons will
obtain care that promotes desired outcomes for individuals and society,
is consistent with emerging knowledge, and occurs in a humane and
respectful manner.
Since 1970, SCCM has supported numerous educational sessions, including
its annual Congress. In 1973, the SCCM recognized the need for a
specialty journal in the field of critical care and created the
journal Critical Care Medicine Online that currently has
approximately 15,000 subscribers. This journal, which has developed
into the leading multidisciplinary critical care journal in the
world, serves an important educational role for most intensivists.
The specialty of Critical Care Medicine Online is demanding,
rapidly progressing, and highly complex. Specialists, trainees,
and allied professionals working in this discipline have limited
time for continuing medical education and similarly, limited opportunities
to attend formal didactic programs. Web-based continuing medical
education offers a particularly efficient means for busy practitioners
in this specialty to maintain a contemporary knowledge base in the
field.
Critical Care Medicine Online has an editorial board comprised
of international experts in the field and publishes original clinical
research papers, review articles, basic science studies, and case
reports—presenting cutting edge material to its readership.
The mission of the journal is to disseminate state of the art information
to the readership to improve the delivery of care to the critically
ill worldwide. Related to this mission, the instructional intent of
our online CME is to provide a readily available, credible, and effective
means for critical care medicine physicians and allied professionals
to obtain current continuing medical education in diagnosis and contemporary
treatment. This resource will also serve as an educational tool for
critical care medicine practitioners worldwide who subscribe to the
journal.
It is our vision that the journal Critical Care Medicine
will provide continuing medical education to critical care physicians
and other health care professional in a manner that promotes their
acquisition of knowledge that will either reinforce their practice,
or enable them to acquire knowledge that will improve the care of
critically ill and injured patients. We believe that physicians
will participate by reading selected articles from each issue of
the journal, and thereafter completing an online CME quiz.
