Target Audience

This CME activity is intended for pediatricians and family practitioners.

Statement of Needs

In 1982, the routine childhood immunization schedule consisted of seven shots and four doses of oral polio vaccine. Seven diseases were considered vaccine-preventable. The 2007 routine childhood immunization schedule calls for as many as 37 shots and 3 doses of an oral vaccine; 16 diseases are now considered vaccine-preventable. In fact, the schedule has become so complicated that is has been split into two versions: one for children 0 to 6 years of age and another for children 7 to 18 years of age.

In the last two years alone, new vaccines have been licensed for boosting pertussis immunity; preventing invasive meningococcal disease; preventing severe rotavirus diarrhea; and preventing cervical cancer from human papilloma virus infection. In addition, new recommendations have been issued for use of varicella, influenza, mumps, and hepatitis A vaccines. While these advancements are extremely good news in terms of public health, all of this is also terribly burdensome and confusing for practitioners. Physicians are continuously bombarded with vaccine information, but it comes from all directions and in piecemeal fashion.

The purpose of The Vaccine Quarterly (TVQ) is to distill this cacophony of vaccine information into a durable product that is readable, relevant, concise, academic, and practical. Each journal issue will have three components: 1) a Literature Review Section, wherein eight recent primary scientific articles that are of particular importance to vaccination providers will be reviewed; 2) an Editor’s Section, wherein new recommendations, licensures, and other vaccine news will be highlighted; and 3) an invited Guest Article, written by a preeminent expert in the field and addressing a timely vaccine topic.

Participants are expected to be up-to-date on the latest authoritative vaccine recommendations, so as to deliver the best care to their patients. In addition, they are expected to gain insight into the latest scientific research related to vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases.

This CME program will be presented in a journal format, which will be mailed to members of the target audience by LCMEI. Practitioners will have a self-test opportunity to reinforce their learning experience and to obtain CME credits. An evaluation assessment questionnaire following the CME examination will confirm the quality of the educational activity, the value and use of the learned material in their practice, confirm the activity credit designation, gauge the fairness and balance of the activity, and provide practitioners with the opportunity to suggest topics for future LCMEI CME activities.
