LWW.com Inside Quote
"That is all very fine, but it won't do -- anatomy, botany. Nonsense, Sir! I know an old woman in Convent Garden who understands botany better, and as for anatomy my butcher can dissect a joint full as well. No, young man, all this is stuff: you must go to the bedside, it is there alone you can learn disease."
-- Thomas Sydenham (1624 - 89)
Cromwellian physician, who was dubbed 'the English Hippocrates'

Product Spotlight: Intervention, international journal of mental health, psychosocial work and counseling in areas of armed conflict
Intervention

Beginning this year and for the next three years, Wolters Kluwer has committed its publishing expertise and financial support to War Trauma Foundation, a Dutch-based organization providing worldwide psychological support to traumatized victims of war, terror and organized violence.

Wolters Kluwer will support War Trauma Foundation in this objective by publishing the international journal of mental health, psychosocial work and counseling in areas of armed conflict: Intervention.

Intervention is a publication of the War Trauma Foundation published thrice yearly, and is an international multi-disciplinary journal of mental health, psychosocial work and counseling in areas of armed conflict. It makes trauma treatment accessible to victims of War, terror and organized violence throughout the World.

The audience for this journal includes mental health workers such as psychiatrists, psychotherapists and psychiatric nurses, and also for counsellors, psychosocial workers and community workers, staff members of NGO's developing mental health or psychosocial projects, and international experts in the field. The Foundation is currently active in 18 war-torn countries throughout the world. Intervention is an essential tool in spreading the latest information gained from the practical experience of fieldworkers, so that their findings can inspire and support others carrying out similar interventions.

Readers have access to evaluations of current projects involving victims of armed conflict. Translations make the content accessible to field workers operating in regions where armed conflict is prevalent and readers can apply general problems that may relate to their situation via specific case reports. Specific content includes:

  • Current projects - descriptions and evaluations of current projects in the fields of community mental health, counselling or psychosocial work, including training approaches for local professionals
  • Case reports – describing individual cases that are illustrative in some way of a more general problem
  • literature reviews
  • original articles
  • Book reviews
  • Abstract summaries of articles published in Arabic, French, Sinhala, Spanish, and Tamil
  • E-mail notification of new issues as posted
  • Pay-per-view articles available

arrow A doctor was to give a speech at an AMA dinner. Running late, he quickly jotted down some notes for his speech. Unfortunately, as he stood in front of his colleagues later that night, he found that he couldn't read his notes. He shuffled his notes and nervously cleared his throught as he frantically tried to come up with something to say. Suddenly, his face brightened. "Is there a pharmacist in the house?"

Medical experts have observed that people who stutter rarely do when they are alone or talking to a pet.
Medical experts warn that compulsive exercising can be just as bad for a person as no exercise at all. The human body needs 24 hours without exercise about once a week in order to cleanse itself of lactic acid and other waste products of strenuous activity.
Per a British medical journal report, the fungi that feed on old paper may be mildly hallucinogenic, and the "fungal hallucinogens" may cause an "enhancement of enlightenment" in readers. The source of creative inspiration for many great authors through history may have been a quick sniff of moldy books, causing them to get high.
The first woman to become a physician in the United States was Elizabeth Blackwell. In 1847, she came to Philadelphia, but the seven medical schools in the city refused her. Finally she was accepted at Geneva Medical College in Geneva, New York. The first female physician to open a private practice in Philadelphia was Dr. Hannah Longshore.
Smoking costs the U.S. Air Force $107 million a year in lost productivity and medical costs. According to government researchers, 25 percent of men on active duty and 27 percent of women smoke.
The most advanced area of medicine in the ancient world was ophthalmic surgery. Celsus (A.D. 14-37) left detailed descriptions of delicate cataract surgery using sophisticated needle syringes.
Some people who are completely blind can somehow sense light, says a New England Journal of Medicine study. This discovery may explain what keeps the biological rhythms of some people who are blind in sync with that of people who can see.
Though Frederick Banting and Charles Best were co-discovers of insulin, only Banting was officially recognized for the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1923. He shared his winnings with Best, though.
The term "allopathy" is used by homeopaths, chiropractors, and other advocates of alternative health practices to refer to traditional medicine.
The term "quack," comes from a 16th century word, "quacksalver," that meant a peddler who sold fake medicines on the street.

Web Watch

ProVationMedical.com

ProVation® MD is the first medical-procedure documentation and coding-compliance solution to let medical specialists create highly detailed notes in minutes instead of days.

ProVation MD software is designed by 12 full-time, in-house physicians and coders, working together with more than 75 clinician and coder consultants to create software that mimics a physician's or nurse's natural preferences and workflows. At its core, ProVation is intuitive software developed by physicians to help their colleagues focus on patients rather than paperwork. ProVation software enhances patient safety through better documentation, automatic data tracking, and quality improvement. This includes the automated population of Post-Procedure Orders and Patient Instructions; automated recall functionalities for patient follow-up and pathology results due; and device tracking and many other features.

Only ProVation MD provides the missing link between clinical terminology and reimbursement codes. The software prompts the clinician to document efficiently, then generates the corresponding CPT and ICD-9 codes and CCI edits ready for review by HIM and coding staff. The result is coder-ready documentation delivering compliance, proper reimbursement, and shortened days in Accounts Receivable.

Read case studies and download free white papers about ProVation MD.

Also available: ProVation MultiCare software for perioperative documentation - nurses, anesthesiologists, surgeons and other caregivers involved in the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) documentation process can quickly gather and share clinical information. ProVation MultiCare enables surgery centers to enhance the quality of patient care, reduce administrative costs and achieve compliant, standardized documentation. Together with ProVation® MD software for physician procedure documentation and coding, ProVation MultiCare maximizes caregiver efficiency and allows for increased patient throughput by presenting timely, accurate information at the point of care.

Practice Management Tip: Boost Patient Education With Technology
Practices in orthopaedics, neurology, primary care, emergency services, dermatology, gynecology, pulmonology, or rheumatology may want to check out the new Portland, Oregon company, Wired MD (www.wired.MD) for 150 patient education modules that can be accessed from the physician’s office over a computer. Wired MD can deliver a library or single patient education modules during exam room waiting time in one of seven different languages. Before patients leave they get a print out of the information along with a “prescription” for self-care and a way to access the information via the Internet. Although the Internet has become a common source for health information, research indicates that 75 percent of individuals cite their physician as the most credible source for helping them choose which information to trust.
