Glossology Glint

arrow thyroid. The thyroid cartilage, or Adam's Apple, which protects the throat, was named for its resemblance to the shields of Homeric warriors, deriving from the Greek work for "shield" or "shield-shaped." It gave its name to the thyroid gland that straddles the windpipe. The term is first recorded in 1693.

Visit the Exercise Science specialty store for titles related to the thyroid, such as Werner and Ingbar's The Thyroid A Fundamental and Clinical Text 9th Edition

arrow Lyme disease. Lyme disease is named after the Connecticut town where it was first recognized in the 1970s. The miniscule tick Ixodes dammini harbors the spirochetes of the disabling disease. The ticks are carried to humans by deer and white-footed mice that leave them on grass and foliage.

Special Report: Protect yourself from fraud and identity theft online
By Heather Walls, Internet Marketing Manager, LWW.com

LWW.com has put numerous safeguards in place to ensure that your information remains secure with us, and we are continually finding new ways to protect your information. However, identity theft and credit card fraud occur everywhere, not just online, so it is important to takes steps to protect yourself in all situations. This month, we have listed below some basic steps that will help you keep your information secure in an online environment.

closed security lock
1. Security locks and web addresses. Always check to make sure that web pages where you enter sensitive information such as credit card numbers or social security numbers contain a closed security lock on the status bar (see image). You should also check to make sure that the web addresses for pages on which you enter this information start with https rather than just http. Both items are best. It is not necessary for all pages of a checkout or sign-up process to have these items, only the pages on which you enter the sensitive information.

Also, do not rely solely on the pop-up dialogue box that specifies you are entering a secure web site. This is part of your browser settings and can get turned off.

verisign secure logo
2. Verisign secure logo. Check to see if the web site contains a VeriSign secure logo (see image) or similar security verification affiliation. If it has one of these and you click on the logo to verify the security, then it is safe to proceed. However, if the site doesn't have one, then do not enter any personal information on that web site.

3. Encrypted information. Never allow a site to store credit card numbers or other sensitive information if they do not encrypt the information with ****. The information should be encrypted on both the web site and in any e-mails the site sends you containing this information. Find out if the web site stores the sensitive information on a server that is not secure or is not monitored frequently. If they do, then the information may still vulnerable to hackers.

4. Phishing. Never, ever respond to e-mails that ask you for your address, phone number or other seemingly harmless information. Some organizations operate solely to collect this information so that they may use it, in turn, to open up new credit card accounts under the names they collect. This practice is called phishing and it is most commonly used under the guise of eBay and Paypal.

5. Spyware. Do not install programs such as WeatherBug and Golden Palace Casino on your computer. These programs are related to spyware and exist only to swipe your personal information. Some of these programs often contain viruses that can harm your computer as well. In some cases, the programs themselves are not spyware, but they cause a multitude of pop-ups which result in computer crashes and automatic downloads. So, it is wise to also avoid web sites that cause multiple pop-ups if you do not have any pop-up blockers installed. Click here for a list of common spyware programs.

6. Children. Advise your children not to give out any personal information online to anyone, such as address and phone number, not only for their own personal safety but also to prevent identity theft.

In all situations, you must be very selective about who you trust and the companies you order from both online and offline. Identity thieves may not look like criminals. They may appear in unsuspecting forms. For example, over six years ago, while I was working for a previous employer, the mail carrier servicing the office building was arrested for stealing credit cards and credit card offers from the people she delivered mail to! She hardly seemed like the kind of person that would do something like that.

Remember, identity theft can happen anywhere, at anytime, not just over the Internet. Protect yourself offline by removing your mail from your mailbox promptly and shredding every piece of mail thoroughly before tossing it in the garbage. In a future issue of Insider, we’ll provide you with some steps to protect yourself from identity theft in offline situations.

Practice Management Tip: Use Value Based Cost Management To Find Areas Where You Can Improve

Value based cost management is a business framework for thinking about how to eliminate non-value-added activities and focus those same resources on areas where value can be added. If you can understand the relationship between cost, quality, and time in your environment, you can concentrate on activities that add value and eliminate those that don’t.

Kicab Castaneda-Mendez, author of Value Based Cost Management for Health Care, says a good way to do an analysis is to convert cost, quality, and time variables to a common scale. For example, in the process of patient flow throughout your office, one step is the pre-visit. In this step you will try to get accurate and timely insurance information, ascertain the reason for the visit, facilitate patient access, obtain the medical record, and assure prior authorization for your services. You can develop time measures for the pre-visit. For example, you could have a goal that says we’ll accomplish the pre-visit activities in five minutes. Then you can measure how often you actually meet that goal, and begin to associate dollar costs with this step (the amount of time your staff spends and a portion of overhead). Quality in this case is a matter of how well you complete your defined process--how many errors you make, how much rework has to be done. Once you can measure quality, time, and cost with the same scale, you can begin to see where to put your efforts for improvement.
