PHILADELPHIA, PA. (September 14, 2009) - TMedical publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) has adopted a new tool to ensure the authenticity of content published in its professional journals and textbooks. LWW has implemented CrossCheck, an automated service offered by CrossRef in collaboration with iParadigms, LLC, to verify articles in close to 150 of their journals. LWW is part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health and pharmacy.
“Electronic access to content has many advantages, but it has also fueled a growth in plagiarism,” said Karen Abramson, President and CEO of Medical Research for Wolters Kluwer Health “The medical societies that we represent and our millions of readers count on us to provide authentic and credible professional content. CrossCheck will vastly improve our ability to verify original work.”
CrossCheck was created by CrossRef, a non-profit association founded and directed by publishers, including LWW. CrossRef partnered with iParadigms to create a full-text database of proprietary and open web content. Participating members can verify the originality of works submitted for publication using the CrossCheck service.
The CrossCheck database includes over 20 million journal articles from the world’s leading scholarly publishers and associations. CrossCheck is the first tool to fully automate the process of reviewing submissions against a comprehensive database of previous publications. As a program participant, LWW contributes all of its full-text journal articles to the CrossCheck database. LWW will integrate CrossCheck directly into its editorial workflows to support the peer review process and verify the authenticity of scientific and medical content.
“This collaborative effort to create a pooled, searchable database of full-text literature from multiple publishers reinforces our commitment to retain the highest standards in professional publishing,” said Abramson. “Our goal, and the goal of the societies we represent, is to advance legitimate scientific and medical research, and this tool greatly aids in that process.”
“We are thrilled to permanently add LWW’s large and sophisticated database of current and archival medical and scientific content to CrossCheck,” said Robert Creutz, General Manager of iParadigms. “This addition will improve the effectiveness and scope of our tool and benefit all of our members. In turn, LWW will continue to enhance the credibility of their publications.”
