Philadelphia, Pa. (August 29, 2011) – The Journal of Addiction Medicine, the official journal of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, has been selected for indexing in MEDLINE, the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) premier bibliographic database. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.
“Being indexed in MEDLINE is an important landmark for ASAM’s journal and for our medical specialty,” comments Shannon C. Miller, M.D., of the Cincinnati VA and the University of Cincinnati’s Center for the Treatment, Research, and Education in Addictive Disorders (CeTREAD), and co-editor of Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM). “Most importantly, it will enhance the ability of all professionals to find evidence-based data to improve the care of patients with addiction-related conditions.”
Indexing Supports JAM’s Role in Translating Addiction Science Research into Clinical Practice
MEDLINE is the leading tool for online searching of the health sciences literature in the United States and worldwide. Journal of Addiction Medicine becomes one of nearly 5,000 journals currently indexed for MEDLINE and one of a handful of indexed publications in the field of addiction medicine.
Journals are selected for indexing in MEDLINE after careful review by the NLM’s Literature Selection Technical Review Committee, based on issues such as the journal’s scope and coverage and the quality of its scientific content and editorial work. Of the hundreds of journals considered each year, only 20 to 25 percent are accepted for indexing. Health care professionals and the members of the public can freely access MEDLINE at www.pubmed.gov.
Each issue of Journal of Addiction Medicine will be fully indexed, including NLM’s controlled vocabulary, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®). The journal will be indexed retroactively to volume 1, issue 1.
Now in its fifth year of publication, Journal of Addiction Medicine has rapidly become an essential resource for physicians and all health professionals involved in the treatment of addiction-related disorders. In that brief time, JAM’s impact factor, as reported in Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports®, has steadily increased—even without being indexed in MEDLINE. The addition of MEDLINE indexing should strengthen future impact factor growth.
Each quarterly issue of Journal of Addiction is sent to the membership of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) as well as other subscribers. Members and subscribers can also access each issue online at the journal website, www.journaladdictionmedicine.com.
“Being indexed in MEDLINE will provide authors a venue for rapid dissemination of original research to practitioners and the clinical research community,” comments Martha J. Wunsch, M.D., of Blacksburg, Va., co-editor of Journal of Addiction Medicine. “JAM scholarly reviews of timely topics in Addiction Medicine, paired with clinical cases, will be easier to access for the practicing clinician and trainee.”
“We believe that being indexed in MEDLINE will bring JAM to the next level in terms of bridging the translation gap between new findings from basic and clinical research in addiction and clinical practice,” adds George Koob, Ph.D., of The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, Calif., senior editor of Journal of Addiction Medicine. “This provides JAM with a unique niche in the field.”
