New York, NY (September 1, 2011) – Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, is pleased to announce that the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) has been selected as the 2011 recipient of the Nursing Media Award for Print by Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the Honor Society of Nursing.
The American Journal of Nursing is the oldest and most honored nursing journal in the world. Peer-reviewed and evidence-based, it is considered the profession’s premier journal and is the only broad-based nursing journal indexed in the ISI Web of Science.
Sigma Theta Tau International honors nurses and health care organizations for their contributions to professional excellence. These awards recognize achievement in the fields of technology, media, chapter excellence, research, and leadership.
AJN has received the award for its article series, Evidence-Based Practice: Step by Step, which has been running in AJN for the past year. The series focuses on implementing evidence-based practice at point-of-care and was developed in conjunction with the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s Center for the Advancement of Evidence-Based Practice. Ellen Fineout-Overholt and Bernadette Melnyk are the series leaders and authors, along with other faculty.

Sigma Theta Tau International will present the award to Maureen ‘Shawn’ Kennedy, RN, MA, Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nursing, at the 41st Biennial Convention hosted by STTI in Grapevine, Texas, October 29 through November 2, 2011.
Ms. Kennedy received her BSN from Hunter College-Bellevue School of Nursing, and her Master’s degree in nursing from New York University. She has authored many journal articles and book chapters including, 100 Years of American Nursing-Celebrating a Century of Caring (Lippincott, 1999), a pictorial documentary of nursing in the United Sates in the 19th century, which she co-authored with Thelma Schorr. Ms. Kennedy has been a visiting nurse scholar at the World Health Organization’s Office of Nursing and Midwifery, and was recently inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame. Ms. Kennedy is a member of the American Nurses Association, the New Jersey State Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, and the Association of Healthcare Journalists.
AJN is the only nursing journal named one of the 100 Most Influential Journals in Biology & Medicine over the last 100 Years by the Special Library Association and has won more editorial awards than any other nursing journal.
