Nurse Brings Photo Exhibit to Russell Senate Office Building To Portray Vital Role of Nurses

New York, NY (January 24, 2011) – The American Journal of Nursing‘s award-winning photo exhibit, Faces of Caring: Nurses at Work, will be on display today, January 24 through January 28, 2011 (10 am – 5 pm), in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building, in Washington, D.C. The exhibit contains compelling images of nurses and patients, conveying the impact of the everyday courageous and important work that is nursing. The American Journal of Nursing (AJN), widely recognized as the leading voice of nursing since 1900, is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Kathleen Bartholomew, MN, RN, a consultant and speaker from the state of Washington mounted and sponsored the exhibition. Bartholomew enlisted the help of her legislators, Congressman Rick Larsen and Senator Patty Murray, to get the necessary clearances and permissions for this unique location within the Senate building. Bartholomew will be available during the exhibit hours to speak with passers-by about the vital work of nursing.

Because the public is largely uninformed about the many different roles nurses have in health care, the exhibit’s visual portrayal of nurses at work helps to communicate the important work of nursing, as a profession grounded in science, technology, and knowledge, and also to inspire individuals to pursue a nursing career.

AJN’s Faces of Caring: Nurses at Work photographs are the winners and selected honorees from an international photo contest that was first exhibited at New York University College of Nursing in New York City in 2007, with the support from the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future, the Beatrice Renfield Foundation and the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence. Since then, the photographs have traveled to various cities throughout the U.S. as a vehicle to advance the awareness of the vital role of nursing.
