Five Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Journals Ranked Among Top 100 Most Influential Biology and Medical Journals of the Past 100 Years

Philadelphia, PA (April 15, 2009) – The Special Libraries Association (SLA) has named five journals published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) among the 100 most influential biology and medical journals of the past 100 years. American Journal of Nursing (AJN), Anesthesia & Analgesia, Circulation, Critical Care Medicine, and Neurology were named to the “DBIO Top 100″ list based on results of a poll issued by the SLA’s Biomedical & Life Sciences Division (DBIO) in celebration of the SLA’s 100th anniversary. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins is part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry.

After nomination by an international panel of eminent subject experts, the journals in the DBIO Top 100 were determined by the votes of nearly 700 librarian members of the DBIO.

The nominations included current journals, along with influential titles of the past century. The fields represented include clinical medicine, allied health sciences, molecular and cellular biology, and natural history.

“We are honored that so many of our journals ranked in the DBIO Top 100 and also received a high percentage of the votes cast,” said Karen Abramson, President and CEO of Wolters Kluwer Health, Medical Research. “These rankings are a testament to our long-term commitment to quality publishing and to the many contributing authors who make our journals the most reliable sources for peer-reviewed medical content.”

LWW’s American Journal of Nursing received over 50 percent of the total votes in its category, which included 12 nursing publications. The American Journal of Nursing is the oldest and largest circulating broad-based nursing journal in the world, and has been the nation’s leading nursing publication since 1900.

Anesthesia & Analgesia won 50 percent more votes than any competing nominated journal, and was the only journal of anesthesiology to be voted to the list. Circulation is a weekly publication of the American Heart Association, and ranks first among journals in the Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems, Hematology, and the Peripheral Vascular Disease categories, according to the 2008 Journal Citation Reports®. Neurology is the official publication the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and is the leading clinical neurology journal worldwide. Critical Care Medicine is the official journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and provides peer-reviewed research for specialists who treat patients in the ICU and CCU.

The complete list of the 100 journals named to the DBIO 100 can be viewed on the SLA website. The Top 100 honors will be presented at the SLA’s Centennial Conference in Washington, D.C., on June 16, 2009. At the ceremony, the SLA will announce which journals placed in the top 10, and will name the “Journal of the Century.”
