Introduction to Sectional Anatomy, the second edition, started as a small collection of CT and MRI teaching films. Like most faculty, each year I tried to improve my lectures by adding some new films and by adding more detail to help the students better understand the subject. Over the years, the students have helped me developed a nice collection of cases. As they graduated and went on to become my colleagues, they started to ask me if they could have copies for their own classes. Each year, I would copy the materials and mail them out. As the packages got heavier each year, one of my students suggested that I might consider getting the teaching material published so each student could have their own copy. So the next year, I sent a package to LWW and they agreed to publish the first edition in 2001.

Since the first edition was printed, we have continued to collect new cases and I have been looking forward to updating the published teaching materials. In the 2e of Introduction to Sectional Anatomy, we have added a variety of new 3D and PET/CT images that provide a new perspective making it easier to understand the sectional images. Aside from the updates, the most notable change in the 2e is found in the web based supplements. Without diluting the text content, we were able to add a large variety of teaching resources that will give faculty the ability to “pick and choose” and create their own ready-made courses. For instance, the Instructor Resources includes over 130 new clinical cases faculty can choose from to show their students how this knowledge will improve their clinical practice. I’m hoping this second edition will make it easier for both faculty and students to keep pace with the rapidly changing field of medical imaging.
